Best Soup Maker (UK)

Soup is a tasty, nutritious and versatile dish that is quick and easy to make—if you have a soup maker that is. Soup makers work by blending and cooking soup in one machine, which saves on the washing up and makes preparing soup quicker and more straightforward. They offer an easy way to get your 5 a day.

Read on for some advice on choosing a soup maker, or skip down to our reviews of the best models available in the UK in 2017.

Choosing a soup maker

Below are some things to consider when choosing a soup maker.

  • Price: Most soup makers cost between £30 and £100, though there are a few high-end models that cost over £100.
  • Capacity: A serving of soup is about 250 ml, but since the volume of ingredients reduces as they cook you will need about 400 ml of capacity per serving. This means that a 1.6-litre capacity will make about 4 servings.
  • Sauté function: This lets you sauté onions and other ingredients to give your soup added flavour.

Morphy Richards 501016 Soup and Smoothie Maker

Features

  • 4 settings: smooth, chunky, blend, juice
  • 6-litre capacity
  • Countdown timer
  • Can be used as a smoothie maker

Morphy Richards was one of the first companies to manufacture a dedicated soup maker machine, and their soup makers still dominate the market today. The Morphy Richards 501016 is one of the most popular soup makers available in the UK at the moment.

This soup maker has a 1.6-litre capacity which means it can make about four servings at a time. This makes it a good choice for families. If you’re cooking for fewer people you might want to freeze the rest and eat it another day.

The  Morphy Richards 501016 is easy to use. You just chop up the ingredients into small pieces, put them in the soup maker and select either the ‘smooth’ or ‘chunky’ setting. The ‘smooth’ setting takes 21 minutes to cook soup while the ‘chunky’ setting takes 28 minutes.

Cleaning this soup maker is easy as you can remove the jug and rinse it out. While this isn’t much hassle, it would be nice if the Morphy Richards 501016 had a self-clean function like the Cuisinart SSB1U Soup Maker.

One issue with this soup maker is that sometimes food can burn to the bottom. When this happens it’s difficult to clean the burnt food off.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Makes soup quickly (20-30 minutes)

Cons

  • No self-clean function
  • Food sometimes burns on the bottom of the jug

Morphy Richards 501014 Saute and Soup Maker

Features

  • 4 settings: smooth, chunky, blend, juice
  • 6-litre capacity
  • Sauté function
  • Pause function
  • Countdown timer
  • Can be used as a smoothie maker
  • Non-stick coating

The Morphy Richards 501014 is very similar to the Morphy Richards 501016 reviewed above, the key difference being that the 501014 has a sauté function so you can sauté vegetables and other ingredients to give them extra flavour. This extra feature makes the Morphy Richards 501014 a bit more expensive than the 501016, so it’s only recommended if you’re going to make use of it.

As with the Morphy Richards 501016, the 501014 cooks soup in 21 or 28 minutes depending whether you’ve selected the ‘smooth’ or ‘chunky’ setting. You can also use it to make juices, smoothies and milkshakes.

This soup maker has a pause setting which lets you take the lid off part way through cooking to add extra ingredients.

While this soup maker generally works great, a large number of users have had issues with it tripping circuit breakers. Another issue is that food sometimes burns on the bottom, though this is a common issue with soup makers in general.

Pros

  • Makes soup quickly
  • Easy to use
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Many users have electrical problems with this model
  • Sometimes food burns on the bottom
  • Quite noisy
