If you’re reading this cookware article, you may have heard some horror stories about non-stick frying pans.

Non-stick coatings on cookware can contain harmful chemicals that can release toxins during cooking.

These chemicals are usually only released during high-temperature cooking, for example, if you transfer your frying pan to the oven. If the oven is hot enough, the non-stick coating can begin to release toxins.

There are other ways that cookware can release these toxins, but high heat is the most common way.

So, wouldn’t it be great if there was a non-stick pan that didn’t release these toxins? Perhaps even a pan that has no harsh chemicals involved in the coating at all? Well, wouldn’t that be lovely!

Thankfully, there is. Below we’ve listed some of our favourite non-stick frying pans that are safe and healthy.

Non-Stick Coating Jargon Explained

When researching non-stick pans, you’ll encounter lots of strange chemical names and acronyms. Here’s a quick explanation of the main non-stick coating terms.

Cadmium and lead – Cadmium and lead are harmful heavy metals that can be leached from some enamel coatings on cast iron cookware. Shannon from Natural Baby Mama tested her Le Creuset cookware for cadmium leaching and found that it leached cadmium when cooking an acidic pasta sauce.

PFAS – PFAS stands for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances. It is a group of artificially manufactured chemicals used to make non-stick cookware surfaces, stain-resistant clothes and firefighting foam. Research into PFAS suggests that it has a range of negative health effects including increasing cholesterol levels and causing changes in liver enzymes.

PFOA – PFOA stands for perfluorooctanoic acid. It is a man-made chemical used to make Teflon and other similar chemicals. In addition to non-stick cookware, it’s also used in products such as water-repellent clothing and stain-resistant carpets. It can stay in the human body for a long time, and its prevalence means that most of us have some of it in our blood. High levels of exposure has been linked to range of health issues including cancer, thyroid disease and liver damage.

PTFE – PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene. It is a synthetic compound that was discovered by DuPont in 1938, creating a revolution in cookware manufacturing. The most well-known PTFE-based material is Teflon.

What Makes a Non-Stick Frying Pan Safe and Healthy?

As I said above, some non-stick coatings are made using harsh chemicals. So, you need to find a non-stick coating that isn’t made with these.

The chemicals in question include PFOA, PTFE and other less commonly known ones like APEO, NEP and NMP. So, to ensure that a frying pan is as safe as possible, avoid any frying pan with any mention of these chemicals.

But how can a frying pan be healthy? Surely, a frying pan cannot be adding anything into your food that is good for you, can it?

Well, no. A lot of manufacturers call their frying pans healthy because they don’t release these chemicals, but there is another reason too.

The other reason is the non-stick coating used in place of the harmful ones. Ceramic non-stick coatings, for example, are so good that you do not have to use much oil at all during cooking. This means that these frying pans help with a healthy lifestyle simply because they reduce the amount of butter or oil you need to use during cooking.

That is really it, that is how a frying pan can be safe and healthy. Another great thing about these frying pans is that they are inexpensive. A good quality frying pan with a safe non-stick coating that reduces the use of oil will not break the bank. Just before we get to our examples of these frying pans, though, let’s take a quick look at choosing a frying pan, shall we?

Choosing a Safe Non-Stick Frying Pan

We have covered choosing a non-stick frying pan in other articles, so this will be a quick overview of the topic. Make sure you check out our other non-stick frying pan articles for more info.

Basically, choosing a frying pan is all about compatibility with your hob, the size and the thickness of the metal.

Hob type

Do you have an induction hob? Then you’ll need a frying pan that you can use with that hob. There are plenty of safe, non-stick frying pans on the market that are suitable for induction hobs, and we have included examples below.

Size

Size-wise, we recommend getting a few frying pans of different sizes. This allows you to cook off different parts of a meal at the same time. It also makes timing a lot easier.

Having a few good-quality frying pans really makes cooking a lot less stressful and far more enjoyable.

Thickness

Finally, the thickness of the walls of a frying pan is important. Now, some frying pans are designed for quick flash frying. The walls of these pans are a lot thinner than others.

Others are designed for a slow build-up of heat, but they are capable of holding this heat a lot better.

The frying pan you choose is ultimately based on personal preference. However, if you’d like a general-purpose frying pan, a thick-walled pan with a good solid base that is 26-28cm in size will serve you well for many years.

Dutch ovens have been a useful tool for both indoor and al fresco cooking for the better part of three-hundred years, and are the perfect option for slow-cooked meals, such as casseroles, stews, and homemade soups. You can also roast various foods, and even bake bread…

So, it’s safe to say there’s virtually nothing a Dutch oven can’t do!

Their key selling point is arguably their versatility, which allows them to be used both on top of and inside your cooker. So, if you’re in the market and are wondering what the best Dutch ovens in the UK are, all will be revealed…

The Best Dutch Ovens in the UK

1. Lodge EC6D32 Enameled Dutch Oven

Capacity: 6 quarts (6.8 litres)

Coming with a choice four colours (indigo, lagoon, midnight chrome, and storm blue), this Lodge enamelled Dutch oven is spacious and can cook foods at a temperature that goes up to 260 degrees Celsius (500 Fahrenheit).

It’s also dishwasher-friendly, which can take the hassle out of your tough slow-cooked stains that have caked themselves to the inside of the enamel.

This Dutch oven is made of cast iron, which is one of the most robust, reliable cooking materials. It’s coated in enamel, meaning you won’t need to season it (as is the case with pure cast iron products) and is safe to come into contact with warm, soapy water.

Enamel can be prone to chipping, which is something a buyer needs to bear in mind, but overall, users of this Lodge Dutch oven are impressed with both its manufacturing and reliability – not to mention the choice of colours available!

Stylish yet simple, this Amazon Basics Dutch oven comes in an option of four colours (white, red, green, and blue).

A few of its negative points, however, include that it is rather heavy and tough to handle. Also, the version labelled ‘white’, is actually more of a cream colour, which may be worth factoring in if your current cookware is white and you want it to match.

Capacity: 4.73 litres

A more traditional-looking Dutch oven, this Lodge L8DD3 is pre-seasoned and can be used on all cooker types (including induction), and despite being enamel coated, is resistant to all utensil types (including metal).

It isn’t labelled as dishwasher-friendly, which can be a nuisance to some, but it can be washed in warm water, and boasts a lifespan of up to one-hundred years.

One of the key features of Dutch ovens in general is that they are brilliant for baking bread, and many users of this Lodge model are singing its praises for that reason alone.

However, this particular product has very mixed reviews in terms of its quality. Some say it will “last a lifetime” and another has knocked it for being… not great.

Capacity: 5.2 litres

This Puricon Dutch oven is a good size, and ideal for bigger households.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the base of this particular Dutch oven isn’t very even, so it might not be suitable for induction hobs, or may create heat spots within the base, which subsequently may affect your food.

Reviews from users are largely very favourable, with many citing it as great value for money, and it being very easy to clean.

It’s been advised by the manufacturer to avoid using metal utensils with this particular Dutch oven.

5. Le Creuset Signature Round Casserole Dish

Capacity: 6.7 litres

Le Creuset is one of the top cookware brands, and for that alone, the price of this Signature cast iron casserole dish is significantly higher than the others on this list.

That said, you’ll get your money’s worth because their products are famed for their sturdiness.

Plus, with its 6.7-litre capacity, you can feed up to eight people with this Dutch oven. It’s also dishwasher-safe, and has no limit on temperature exposure.

The only grumble from users really is that it is incredibly weighty. Though, for the size and material, that’s to be expected.

Dutch Ovens vs Casserole Dishes – What’s the Difference?

Simply put, the difference between a Dutch oven and a casserole is that a Dutch oven is the more versatile of the two. A casserole dish is designed to go in the oven, and that’s it.

But a Dutch oven can go both inside the cooker and on top of the hob, making it ideal for cooking many different foods.

Read out guide to the differences between Dutch ovens and casserole dishes for more detail.

The History of the Dutch Oven

The Dutch oven was popularised by an Englishman named Abraham Darby in the 1800s. Darby travelled to the Netherlands to study metalsmith practices, particularly on the subject of brass.

The Dutch methods of crafting gave him the idea of the Dutch oven, but instead of using brass, he used cast iron, which was a cheaper material.

Traditionally, Dutch ovens would have had three little legs, as well as a handle that allowed them to be dangled over a fire.

Dutch ovens haven’t dwindled in popularity, due to their renowned versatility and that they are useful for outdoor activities, such as camping.

What Are Dutch Ovens Made From?

As we mentioned above, traditionally Dutch ovens were made from cast iron, which is still a popular material for cooking, owing to its robust nature, its ability to draw heat very quickly, its longevity, and that it’s a budget-friendly metal.

Most Dutch ovens nowadays are still made from cast iron, but many are coated in enamel, which makes them much easier to clean. They also do not need to be seasoned because no food will come in direct contact with the cast iron.

You can also get Dutch ovens in other materials, including stainless steel. Traditionally, Dutch ovens didn’t contain an enamel coating. To be technical, an enamel-coated cooking pot is actually called a French oven, otherwise known as cocotte.

Dutch Oven FAQs

Can you put a Dutch oven in the dishwasher?

If your Dutch oven has an enamel coating, you can usually clean it in the dishwasher. If it is pure cast iron, it shouldn’t come into contact with water, and should be regularly seasoned.

What should you look for when buying a Dutch oven?

Consider the size you require. If you cook for many mouths, it is wise to choose a Dutch oven that has a capacity of over five litres.

Material-wise, that is really down to personal preference. Buying one with an enamel coating will be easier to clean (and won’t require seasoning). However, enamel is prone to chipping, so in terms of longevity, a pure cast iron one will probably outlive you.

Are Dutch ovens non-stick?

Technically, no. Dutch ovens (enamelled or otherwise) do not contain non-stick chemicals, such as Teflon). However, if well-maintained, and if food isn’t cooked on too high a temperature, your Dutch oven’s enamel coating should act as non-stick, and should be easy to keep clean.

How do you avoid damaging a Dutch oven?

Cooking on extreme heat – Dutch ovens are designed for slow cooking, and to retain heat, so going OTT with your temperature dials will burn your food/cause it to mould to the sides of the pan.

Metal utensils – This is particularly important with most enamel-coated Dutch ovens. Metal utensils are notorious for chipping coatings, and will effectively shorten the lifespan of your Dutch oven.

Being austere with oil or butter, or not using it at all – As mentioned earlier, Dutch ovens aren’t technically non-stick, so they will require cooking lubricants.

Conclusion

Dutch ovens are a great addition to any kitchen, based on their versatility alone. They’re also beneficial to those who enjoy outdoor adventuring, such as camping and hiking.

While they often look identical to casserole dishes, they exceed the basic casserole dish because they can be used both on top of your stove and inside the oven.

Many Dutch ovens nowadays are still made of cast iron, but often come with an enamel coating, making them easy to clean and not in need of seasoning.

But if you’re still stuck on which option to go with, allow us to lend our expertise. Here at Chef’s Pick, we love the Lodge EC6D32 enamelled Dutch oven. It is reasonably-priced, robust, and those colours are pretty funky!

Diameter: 30 cm (12 inches)

This 30 cm cast iron skillet from Lodge is the ideal size for steak, veg, omelettes and more.

This skillet is suitable for all hob types and comes pre-seasoned from Lodge’s foundry.

You may notice the handle of this skillet is on the small side. However, it has an ‘assist’ handle that allows for safe lifting with two hands. It also has two pouring lips for ease during the cooking process.

The reason this cast iron skillet made the top of our list is simple. It has an iconic cookware design that will last just as long as the skillet itself.

This skillet is built so well that if you treat it right, you’ll be handing this pan down to your kids, your grandkids and their kids.

Le Creuset has taken the cast iron skillet and pushed it into the 21st century with their beautiful styling.

You’ll notice the beautiful exterior, which comes in a choice of colours. This is an enamel coating that will stand up to a lot of cooking abuse.

While an enamel coating on the outside of a cast iron skillet is nothing new, the wonderful colour options that Le Creuset has used is new.

What isn’t new is the classic, robust construction of this skillet. Le Creuset has used the best cast iron for this skillet, and that shows in its heat retention and distribution.

It was a close call between this skillet and the above one for the top spot. We put this skillet second because it’s a bit more expensive, so isn’t ideal for everyone. It could be worth the investment for the passionate cook, though.

3. Landhaus 12.5-Inch Enamelled Cast Iron Skillet

Diameter: 31.75 cm (12.5 inches)

We love this cast iron skillet from Landhaus. In fact, we love the whole cast iron cookware range from this company.

We aren’t sure whether it’s the Prussian blue enamel exterior or the professional-grade cast iron used in the construction of the whole range, but these pans sure are pretty. However, this skillet is far more than just pretty!

The enamel coating on the exterior, for example, has four layers and the company uses the absolute best cast iron possible for their entire cast iron cookware range.

This isn’t a cast iron skillet built to last a few years. This one will live and thrive in even the busiest kitchen for years and years.

If you’re looking for a wonderfully designed range of cast iron cookware, Landhaus has you covered.

Diameter: 20 cm (8 inches)

This cast iron skillet is a bit of a curveball, but we’re adding to our list because we love the design. It has a traditional frying pan design, but all of the amazing heat retention of cast iron.

It has a long wooden handle (made from beech), which is odd for a skillet. It also has a coating of enamel to protect the cast iron and provide a non-stick surface.

This means that this cast iron skillet requires no seasoning, so it suits the modern, busy kitchen. Plus, the styling of this skillet also suits a modern-day kitchen.

How to Choose a Cast Iron Skillet

There are loads of cast iron skillets on the market at the moment, so choosing one can be tricky.

While you could use our list of cast iron skillets above to choose yours, you may be wondering why these skillets made our list over the array of other options on the market.

So, here’s how we choose our cast iron skillets and how you should choose yours too.

Design

You may have seen some really fancy cast iron skillets in your quest to find your favourite. In recent years, many cookware companies have tried to bring cast iron skillets into the 21st century with varying degrees of success.

These modern skillets have different shapes, different styles of handles, and some even come with lids. These design changes can have a direct impact on how the skillets perform.

Many cookware companies have stuck with original designs for this iconic cookware. The Lodge skillet that we picked as our number one skillet is a prime example of this.

Lodge has been making cast iron cookware from its foundry in America since 1896. The design of its skillets has largely gone unchanged since the company was founded.

When choosing a skillet, you need to decide whether a modern skillet (with fancy new styling, shapes and handles) is right for you.

Or if a traditional skillet is better suited to your needs. In our opinion, bearing in mind the design of cast iron skillets can be traced back nearly 2,000 years, we’d say a traditional style is still the best way to go.

The simple styling of traditional cast iron skillets performs perfectly, even in the most modern kitchen.

Shape and size

A lot of home cooks buy a cast iron skillet to fill a void in their cooking arsenal. Perhaps you are replacing a well-used frying pan, or you are looking for the perfect pan for searing steaks. Well, as you’ll know, cast iron skillets come in many shapes and sizes.

If you are replacing a frying pan, a direct replacement (a round skillet of the same size) may be the best choice.

If you are looking for a good-sized steak sizzler, a cast iron skillet that can comfortably fit the average-sized steak you enjoy will ensure you always get the best result.

Handle length

Some skillets have stubby little handles, and others have nice long handles that fit comfortably in the hand. Skillets with shorter handles are designed so they can fit into the oven easily.

So, if you intend to use your skillet in the oven, a shorter handled skillet will be better suited to the type of cooking you want to do.

However, if you intend to use your skillet on the hob most of the time, a longer handle offers more control while you cook.

Pre-seasoned and unseasoned

Many cast iron skillets come pre-seasoned nowadays, meaning, after a quick wash, you can use them right out of the box. Of course, you can also buy cast iron skillets that are not seasoned at all.

If you have never seasoned a cast-iron skillet before, a pre-seasoned pan may seem like the better option for you.

However, do remember that you’ll need to season the pan throughout its life, even with a pre-seasoned pan.

So, regardless of whether the pan comes seasoned or not, you’ll need to learn how to season it.

Buying a pre-seasoned pan means that you don’t need to jump into the seasoning process head first, though, so it can be easier for someone new to cast iron.

Cooking surface texture

The last consideration when choosing a cast iron skillet is the texture of the cooking surface. Some cast-iron skillets, usually the more traditional skillets, have a rough surface. While others have a smoother surface.

In general, rough cooking surfaces are easier to season than smoother ones. This is because rougher surfaces hold onto the oil better.

However, rougher cooking surfaces can occasionally latch onto delicate foods like eggs and pancakes. Smoother cooking surfaces have amazing non-stick properties, even without seasoning.

So, if you intend to use your cast iron skillet for delicate foods, a smoother skillet may be the better option for you. Just remember that they are more difficult to season.

If you don’t intend to cook delicate food on your skillet and would prefer a surface that responds better to seasoning, a rougher texture is the way to go.

Caring for Your Cast Iron Skillet

As you know, a good quality cast iron skillet can easily out-live you. However, that is only if you care for that skillet correctly.

Cast iron cookware needs different care to other pots and pans. A skillet doesn’t need your undivided attention or anything.

However, if you don’t take care of your skillet correctly, you can break it or cause the seasoning to fail. Here’s how to best care for a cast iron skillet.

New skillet? Give it a wash

If you have just peeled the sticker off your skillet and you’re excited to use it, that’s awesome.

However, you should visit the sink before the hob to give your skillet a wash. This wash should be done with warm water and soap.

I know, I know, a common sin when it comes to caring for cast iron skillets is washing them in warm water and soap. However, in this case, you’re washing away any rust or factory debris that may be on the skillet.

Season or re-season your cast iron skillet

Now that you’ve washed your skillet, it’s time to season it. Now, your skillet may come pre-seasoned, a few on the list below do, and many smaller manufacturers do season their cast iron skillets at the factory.

You can skip the first step of washing your skillet if it was pre-seasoned, but it’s best to give it a wipe at least, more on how to clean your cast iron in just a moment.

Seasoning is basically baking oil into the surface of the skillet to create a protective layer. Seasoning prevents the pan from rusting and creates a non-stick coating too.

Seasoning is as simple as coating the pan with a small amount of oil and leaving it on the hob to heat up until the oil is smoking. Once cooled down, you can wipe away any excess oil.

Repeat this process until there is a notable colour change and a layer on your cast iron. For more seasoning tips, check out our other article that goes into depth on how to season a pan.

Once your skillet is seasoned, you want to take care of it, so it stays that way. Whenever you use your cast iron skillet, you need to take proper care of it after use.

This care isn’t difficult, but it makes the difference between having a wonderful piece of cookware that brings joy to your kitchen and a nightmare.

Regular cleaning

When cleaning, rinse with warm water and use a brush to get rid of any stuck-on bits. If you’ve used enough oil during cooking, a simple rinse with warm water is normally enough.

If you haven’t, you may need to clean your skillet with salt and oil. Use a few teaspoons of salt and some oil along with a paper towel to remove any really stuck-on food.

You need to use soap when cleaning a skillet, you should avoid soap at all costs, actually. Soap will just cut through your seasoning.

Once dry, season

Once your cast iron skillet is completely dry, give it a coat of oil. This is just a very thin layer of any oil of your choosing.

We have an article about the best oils to use on cast iron skillets that is very helpful with seasoning and this step.

Place the skillet over a low heat, coat the pan in a thin layer of oil, making sure it doesn’t pool anywhere. Typically, one teaspoon over the whole surface is enough.

Storing your cast iron

Once daily upkeep is taken care of, you can store your cast iron. Cast iron needs to be bone dry before you put it away. If not, rust can form, and that ruins even the most well-earned seasoning.

If you’re going to store a pot or pan on top of your cast iron skillet, pop a paper towel in the skillet. This will keep moisture away from the skillet until you’re ready to cook the best steaks, eggs, fish or veg you’ve ever had in your life!

General cast iron cookware advice

It is also vital that you don’t bash your skillet into anything. Dropping it, although unavoidable is also not a great idea.

Also, don’t put it in cold water while it’s still warm. Cast iron is brittle. Any knocks or the shock of cold water can shatter it.

As I said earlier, taking care of a cast iron skillet isn’t difficult. In fact, cast iron is really simple to take care of. It’s just that these steps must be taken so the seasoning is protected and rust doesn’t form.

If you take care of your cast iron skillet, it will last forever. There is a huge market for vintage cast iron skillets.

Cast iron skillets from the late 19th century can still be found!

What Kind of Utensils Should You Use With Cast Iron?

Cast iron is an extremely hard-wearing material. This is why a cast-iron skillet can last decades. That means that you can pretty much use any utensils you like with this cookware.

Many folk like to use stainless steel utensils with cast iron, and they are a great option for cast iron.

Cast iron can take a lot of abuse and come back for more, particularly if you know how to season your cast iron. Because if you happen to scratch some of the seasoning with metal utensils, you can simply re-season it, and your pan is new again.

We would argue, though, that silicone utensils are probably the better way to go. Now, as we said, cast iron cookware can withstand stainless steel utensils for decades and never bat an eye. However, your other pots and pans probably can’t.

So, if you intend to use these utensils with other pots and pans, silicone is probably the best option for you. Of course, if you do want some utensils to use exclusively with your cast iron cookware, by all means, grab some good-quality stainless utensils.

Still, if you have cookware made from other materials, you can use silicone utensils with them all.

Omelette pans are a fantastic addition to any kitchen, even if you don’t cook that many omelettes.

An omelette pan looks exactly the same as a frying pan, pretty much. The main difference between an omelette pan and a conventional saucepan is the sides.

The sides of an omelette pan are the same height as those a normal frying pan. However, they are more flared.

The flared sides mean that you can easily roll omelettes in the pan. They also help you slide the omelette out of the pan when it’s finished cooking.

Omelette pans come in many sizes too. So, whether you want to cook an omelette for one or six, there is a pan to suit your needs.

But where can you find the best omelette pans in the UK? Well, we have the best omelette pans just below.

The Best Omelette Pans in the UK

1. De Buyer Omelette Pan 24 cm

Diameter: 24 cm
Materials: Carbon steel

This omelette pan from French cookware brand De Buyer is part of the brand’s Mineral B range of carbon steel pans with a beeswax finish. The steel is made from 99% iron and 1% carbon

The cooking service measures 6.3 inches (16 cm) across and there is a French-style riveted handle. The shape of the pan makes it easy to turn your omelette and slide it onto a plate.

This pan is free from artificial non-stick coatings such as PTFE. It will have natural non-stick properties if you season it before the first use and re-season it as required.

This requires a bit of thought, but makes the pan safer to use than regular non-stick pans. It will also last much longer, as the surface won’t deteriorate over time like the surface on a regular non-stick pan would.

This pan should last a lifetime if it’s looked after well, making it excellent value for money.

De Buyer’s omelette pan is suitable for all hob types, including induction. It can be used in the oven briefly, but the handle is coated, so it shouldn’t be used in the oven for extended periods of time.

2. TECHEF Frittata and Omelette Pan

Diameter: 24 cm
Materials: Aluminium, Teflon Select non-stick coating

This omelette pan from TECHEF has an unusual design.

It’s split into two halves, and can be folded over to create a symmetrical folded omelette. This is a nice idea, though it can take a bit of practice to fold the pan without bits of your omelette falling over the side.

The pan’s cooking area measures 9.5 by 10.5 inches (24.13 x 25.4 cm), making it big enough for four eggs. If you’re cooking just for yourself, it might be a bit big, unless you have a big appetite of course!

The surface of the pan uses a Teflon Select PFOA-free non-stick coating.

It’s important to note that this pan isn’t induction-compatible, so you can’t use it with an induction hob.

Next up, we have a fantastic omelette pan that looks as great as it cooks. This is the 20 cm pan, but 24 and 28 cm pans are also available depending on how big of an omelette you like.

This pan has a granite non-stick coating that means none of your omelettes will stick to the bottom of it. It also has a beautiful wooden handle that doesn’t heat up as you cook.

We know that cookware looking great isn’t the most important thing. However, this pan looks wonderful and does its job just as well.

It heats quickly and evenly, it can be used on induction hobs, and it has a PFOA-free non-stick coating too. All this for a very reasonable price, you’ll love making omelettes in this pan!

Omelette Pan FAQs

What is the difference between a frying pan and an omelette pan?

Frying pans and omelette pans are very similar, and in most cases a regular frying pan will work fine for cooking omelettes. However, there are a few subtle differences:

Sides – Frying pans have straighter sides. Omelette pans usually have flared, sloping sides, allowing you to easily flip and slide omelettes. The exception to this is Japanese omelette pans, or tamagoyaki pans, which have steep, straight sides.

Handle – Frying pans often have short handles. Omelette pans usually have longer handles, giving you more control and helping you to flip the omelette.

Base – Omelette pans often have a thicker, flatter bottom, which helps you to cook an omelette without burning it.

Are omelette pans worth it?

This really depends on how much you love omelettes! If you regularly cook omelettes and want to take your cooking to the next level, an omelette pan is definitely worth it.

Even if you don’t make omelettes too often, if you already have a large collection of cookware, an omelette pan is a good addition. They aren’t particularly expensive, and really do make a difference if you want to make the perfect omelette.

However, if you only cook omelettes occasionally and aren’t too fussy about them, there’s no need to invest in a specialist pan—a regular frying pan should be fine.

What size should an omelette pan be?

We’ve covered this topic in detail in our guide on the best pan size for omelettes. Here’s a quick summary:

20 cm (8 inches) – Two eggs. This is a good size if you’re cooking for one person.

25 cm (10 inches) – Three eggs. This is probably the most popular size. It’s good if you’re cooking for two.

30 cm (12 inches) – Four eggs. This is a good size if you’re cooking an omelette to share.

Do omelette pans have other uses?

Of course, if you eat an omelette every day of the week, having a pan that can only be used for omelettes sounds great. But what if you only eat omelettes occasionally?

Do omelette pans have any other uses? Well, yes. You can use an omelette pan for anything you can use a normal frying pan for.

In fact, if you are looking to replace your current frying pan, you could replace it with an omelette pan of the same size and enjoy all of the benefits of both.

Of course, what you can use an omelette pan for depends on the size of the pan you buy. For example, my omelette pan is 12 cm. This is great for omelettes, although me and my partner really only use it for frying eggs. Still, a 12 cm omelette pan isn’t really suitable for much else, unless you want to cook the smallest steak of all time!

So, while you can use bigger omelette pans for anything you can use a frying pan for, the smaller pans are a bit restrictive.

Still, a small omelette pan doesn’t take up much room, so even if you can’t use it for loads of things, it won’t be in the way.

Conclusion

We hope you found the perfect omelette pan for your needs above. We love an omelette pan, and as we have learnt, they can do a lot more than just cook the perfect omelette.

If we had to recommend just one to recommend to most people, it would be the De Buyer Omelette Pan. It’s a serious pan made for serious omelettes, and should last a lifetime. It’s also not expensive at all.

An omelette pan is a fantastic addition to your kitchen toolkit. Not only can an omelette pan help you perfect the art of cooking omelettes, but adding one to your kitchen cupboards can also help with a whole host of other cooking tasks!

Below, we’re looking at the best omelette pans available in the UK right now. We also will have a few of the more common questions about these pans, like the best size pan to choose from and more.

First, though, let’s take a look at which pans you should be using for your omelettes, shall we?

Best Omelette Pans for Induction Hobs in the UK

1. Blackmoor 24cm Omelette Pan

Diameter: 24 cm
Materials: Forged aluminium, hybrid stone coating

This omelette pan is our top pick. It has an anti-scratch non-stick coating that allows all foods, but particularly omelettes and eggs, to glide off the surface.

The pan itself is made from heavy forged aluminium. This provides a nice weight to the pan but also offers exceptional heat distribution throughout the cooking process, so you can really cook omelettes like a pro with this pan.

The reason that this omelette pan made the top of our list, though, is that it is a fantastic pan, but the price is basically unbeatable.

The non-stick coating outperforms most in its class, it looks great and works fantastically well for all frying needs, but it works incredibly for omelettes!

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

2. Le Creuset 3-ply Stainless Steel 20cm Omelette Pan

Diameter: 20 cm
Materials: Stainless steel, non-stick coating

Any long-term readers of Chef’s Pick will know that we’re big fans of Le Creuset. The build quality of this cookware is basically unbeatable, and all of the cookware is a joy to use.

This omelette pan is no exception to this either. This is a stainless-steel omelette pan made from 18/10 stainless which doesn’t absorb flavours and is compatible with induction hobs.

This pan has a three-ply construction where stainless steel and aluminium are bonded together to cleverly provide the cooking benefits of both materials. So, you can enjoy even and rapid heating with this omelette pan for years to come.

While this omelette pan is the most expensive on this list, it is a fantastic pan that’s sure to bring years of joy to your kitchen.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

3. Limit 22cm Non-Stick Omelette Pan

Diameter: 22 cm
Materials: Aluminium, non-stick coating

An omelette pan is only as good as its non-stick coating. While the first few pans on this list have had fantastic non-stick coatings, this pan might just beat both of them.

This omelette pan has a scratch-resistant non-stick coating derived from stone which is very hard-wearing. This coating means you need less oil for cooking your omelettes, and it is a 100% mineral-based coating, no harmful chemicals at all.

This omelette pan could have easily made this list with the non-stick coating alone. However, we also love the shape of the pan too.

The pan lends itself to cooking eggs and omelettes thanks to the curved sides. Plus, the handle is a very nice shape too. Combine all of this with the heavy die-cast body, and you have a seriously good omelette pan right here.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

4. Masterclass Chemical-Free Non-Stick 20cm Omelette Pan

Diameter: 20 cm
Materials: Aluminium, stainless steel, non-stick coating

A flat iron base makes this aluminium pan induction compatible. The chemical-free ceramic coating makes it wonderful to use while cooking omelettes.

The handle is nice and comfortable to use even on the longest omelette cooking sessions. So, this pan sounds great for omelette lovers, right?

Well, the reason that this omelette pan found a spot on our list is that it is fantastic for the job, of course, but we love the look of it too.

This pan will look great in any kitchen but will be perfect in a modern kitchen! Oh, and finally, the price of this omelette pan is just as fantastic as everything else.

This is a really nicely designed omelette pan that works very well, and it is arguably the most reasonably priced pan on this list.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

5. Guofeng Granite 24cm Omelette Pan

Diameter: 24 cm
Materials: Aluminium, non-stick coating

Finally, we have an omelette pan that is 24 cm wide. It also has a fantastic stone-derived non-stick coating and can be used on an induction hob.

The frying pan is made from aluminium but has a ferrous bottom to ensure that compatibility with induction hobs isn’t compromised.

The reason this omelette pan made our list, though, is thanks to the incredible non-stick coating. As you may know, cooking omelettes in anything without a good non-stick coating is a real headache. This coating makes cooking eggs enjoyable.

The coating is also nice and tough too, so you’ll be using this omelette pan for a host of tasks in the kitchen for years to come. Just to top this pan off, this also has a wooden handle making it nice and comfortable to use.

Omelette Pan FAQs

Which size omelette pan should I choose?

As you can see, omelette pans come in a few different sizes. A 20 cm omelette pan is perfect for an omelette for one or two people. A 24 cm omelette pan is great for three to four people. We’ve tried to include the best omelette pans available in the UK in both of these sizes above.

What makes an omelette pan different to a frying pan?

An omelette pan typically has curvier sides than a frying pan. This helps to flip the omelette during the cooking process.

It also helps keep the liquid in the pan, while a frying pan is designed to allow the liquid to escape. Many omelette pans look a bit more like a sauté pan than a frying pan, just in a smaller form.

Can an omelette pan be used for cooking other things?

An omelette pan is great for other cooking tasks as it is fundamentally a frying pan. However, most home chefs prefer to save their omelette pans for more delicate cooking tasks like frying eggs, pancakes and, of course, omelettes.

By reserving your omelette pan for these delicate frying operations, you can preserve the non-stick coating and ensure that it works brilliantly for these tasks for longer. Still, you can absolutely use an omelette pan for any type of frying or searing task.

Conclusion

We hope you found the perfect pan for all your egg cooking needs above.

We love the Blackmoor’s non-stick omelette pan. It is a great size for cooking an omelette large enough for the whole family, and it holds heat incredibly well, helping achieve a golden-brown omelette. Plus, for the price, it is an unbeatable frying pan for general use or more delicate work like cooking eggs and omelettes.

Best Non-Stick Frying Pans in the UK

1. Tefal 30cm Comfort Max Non-Stick Frying Pan

Diameter: 30 cm
Materials: Stainless steel, Tefal Power Resist non-stick coating

The reason this Tefal Comfort Max made the top of our list is simple. Firstly, it has the ThermoSpot that has served many Tefal owners, like myself, well for many years. This spot lets you know when the frying pan is at the perfect temperature.

It also has a very durable non-stick coating. This is called the Power Resist non-stick coating, and it is safe in the oven up to 175 degrees.

If you want a frying pan that can be transferred to a hot oven, perhaps choose another pan on our list. However, for general cooking tasks, this Tefal is perfect.

It’s made from superior grade stainless steel. It has a very robust base that won’t deform, and the base will work with an induction hob too.

I love this frying pan because it is very comfortable to use. It is also well made, and the non-stick coating is fantastic.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

2. Blackmoor Frying Pan

Diameter: 20, 24 or 28 cm
Materials: Forged aluminium, hybrid stone coating

This Blackmoor frying pan has a sturdy coating that is both non-stick and anti-scratch. The handle is cool-touch, and it’s suitable for use on all hob types too. Depending on your needs, you can purchase this frying pan with a diameter of 20, 24 or 28 cm.

These frying pans have a sleek, black marble effect coating that will complement any style of kitchen. The frying pan has a medium weight; strong enough to be durable, but not uncomfortably heavy.

Unlike some of the other frying pans on this list, the Blackmoor pan is not dishwasher safe and needs to be carefully hand washed to protect the coating.

That being said, users have found that when looked after well, the non-stick coating is very good and you will need little to no oil to cook most dishes.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

3. Le Creuset 28cm Toughened Non-Stick Frying Pan

Diameter: 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 or 30 cm
Materials: Aluminium, PFOA-free non-stick coating

This frying pan from Le Creuset certainly wins on style points, but it has a lot more to offer than just style too.

The frying pan is made from aluminium and has three layers of a PFOA-free non-stick coating. The coating’s so good that you can use metal utensils with this pan and it has a lifetime warranty.

Plus, as this frying pan has a stainless handle, it can be used in the oven up to 240 degrees Celsius.

Thanks to the aluminium body, this pan has fantastic heat retention. Even on low heats, this pan is capable of sealing food perfectly and creating some wonderful caramelised flavours.

We chose the 28 cm frying pan for our list, but it comes in 20 cm to 30 cm options too. If you want a frying pan with style, class and superior non-stick properties, this one is perfect!

Diameter: 20 and 28 cm
Materials: Hard anodised aluminium, stainless steel, non-stick coating

Remember when I mentioned that two frying pans are often better than one? Well, that is how this fantastic set of frying pans made our list.

Circulon makes some excellent frying pans that have been featured in a few of our lists. However, these professional frying pans are incredible.

Both are made from anodised aluminium and have a stainless-steel base. This means these frying pans are extremely tough.

The non-stick coating on these pans has also been really well thought out. They have used the best non-stick coating possible and then made it better with their Total non-stick system.

Now, I don’t how their Total non-stick system works, but the results are incredible. Circulon has created two frying pans here that will last many years and be extremely versatile in the kitchen too.

Diameter: 24, 28 or 32 cm
Materials: Granite, PFOA-free non-stick coating

When it comes to non-stick coatings, granite is one of the best choices. The granite coating on this pan comes from Switzerland, and there are five layers of it.

If you can destroy this non-stick coating in a few years, then Carote should hire you as a tester because it is extremely tough.

While this pan could’ve easily made this list with just this coating, the frying pan below the coating is also excellent.

The body of this great pan is made from thick aluminium, but it has a base that will work with an induction hob too.

Plus, this frying pan comes with a lid as well. So, suddenly this amazing frying pan offers so many more ways of cooking.

Carote offers a lifetime warranty with this frying pan too, so use it, abuse it and love it!

Diameter: 20 cm
Materials: Aluminium, PFOA-free non-stick coating

Eaziglide makes some exceptional frying pans. The Neverstick 2 range is just the tip of a very non-stick iceberg!

This body of this pan is made from forged aluminium to provide a very robust base. Then, Eaziglide has forge-welded a piece of stainless steel to the bottom of the pan. This forms an unbreakable bond and means this pan is induction hob compatible too.

The Neverstick 2 non-stick coating is a secret formula, but it does contain titanium. This means that this non-stick coating is practically indestructible. Plus, the coating is so good that you don’t need to use oil or butter during cooking.

You can use this pan in the oven, with metal utensils and it is dishwasher safe too. This non-stick coating allows you to cook healthy meals and never worry about your frying pan wearing out!

Guide to Choosing a Non-Stick Frying Pan

Know your non-stick coatings

When choosing a non-stick frying pan, it is important to know what the type of non-stick coating it has.

For many years, manufacturers of frying pans used non-stick coatings that contained harmful chemicals. These chemicals were PTFE and PFOA. These were known for breaking down at high temperatures, typically over 240 degrees Celsius. This breakdown meant that harmful chemicals could be released into your food.

Thankfully, a lot of manufacturers are now breaking away from these non-stick coatings. They are opting instead for more natural non-stick coatings like ceramic and titanium.

Ceramic and titanium provide a really strong bond to the metal of the pan and offer an excellent non-stick coating that will last for years.

Depending on how you use a frying pan, of course, a non-stick coating with PFOA or PTFE can work for you. However, for the most flexibility and durability, while cooking, we recommend a more modern non-stick coating like ceramic or titanium.

Material

Frying pans can be made from stainless steel, aluminium, copper and more. Does the metal really make a difference, though? Well, in a way, yes.

A pan made from aluminium, for example, will heat up differently when compared to a copper pan.

Also, some materials will not work with induction hobs. Keep in mind that frying pans are intended for different purposes, and some are created for a specific cooking method.

Generally, though, if you want a solid frying pan that will last years and perform well during those years, stainless or aluminium is a good bet.

Wall thickness

Even really good frying pans come with a variety of wall thickness. Some very high-end pans have a really thin wall.

This isn’t because the pan is made cheaply; it is designed that way. A thin-walled frying pan heats up really quickly but doesn’t hold heat in so it needs constant high heat to perform well.

A thick-walled frying pan, on the other hand, can hold heat really well, it just takes a bit longer to heat up.

For everyday use, a thick-walled pan is usually acceptable. However, some people prefer a thinner wall.

Is one frying pan enough?

A non-stick frying pan is a cookware essential for most people. However, we recommend having a few different sizes of frying pan. In fact, at home, I have two frying pans of the same size and then another one that is a lot smaller for eggs.

We only have two of the same size frying pans because my partner liked the look of one and I preferred the other.

However, having two frying pans really helps when creating different parts of a meal. For example, if I fancy tuna one night, but my partner wants a steak, we can sear both and cook them to perfection at the same time.

Even if you live alone, two frying pans can be used to cook different components of a meal. Now that we own two frying pans, we certainly won’t be going back to just one, two are so handy!

Size

In most cases, 26cm to 30cm is a good size. With a 30cm frying pan, you can put a good amount of spinach in it or sear a steak without the frying pan cooling down too much.

If you love your steak, 30cm is the best option. As steaks are large, you need a larger pan so that when the meat is first put into the pan, it doesn’t draw all of the heat away from the bottom and the sides.

A 20cm frying pan is excellent for eggs and omelettes, but it isn’t as universal as a pan that’s 26cm to 30cm.

Induction hob ready?

About 80% of frying pans now work with induction hobs because they are increasingly popular. However, if you own an induction hob, or want to own one in the near future, always check. Particularly if you’re purchasing a frying pan on our list.

The frying pans below are extremely good quality, and you’ll have them for years. So, you won’t want to give up your favourite frying pan because it isn’t compatible with your new hob.

Is it oven-safe?

Even frying pans with plastic handles claim to be oven-safe nowadays, but are they really? Some manufacturers claim their frying pans can be used in an oven up to 400 degrees Celsius. For others, it’s about 250 degrees.

If you love transferring your frying pan to the oven, this is an important factor to check. Also, go for a pan that can easily handle the temperatures you typically cook at.

If you go for a pan that can just about manage the heat, the non-stick coating could begin to fail, or other parts of the pan.

Is it dishwasher-safe?

Most non-stick frying pans are dishwasher safe, but do check. Pans made from cast iron, for example, can’t be put in the dishwasher as the cleaning cycle will affect the seasoning on the pan.

To sum up this frying pan buyer guide, there is no pan in the world perfect for everyone. There are certainly general-purpose frying pans that will work perfectly for most general tasks. However, if you want a frying pan for a specific reason, these are things to consider:

How many pans do I need?

Should the walls be thick or thin?

What material should it be made from?

Will it work on my induction hob?

The perfect size for me

Is it oven and dishwasher safe?

Asking yourself how you use or want to use a frying pan will help you buy the right pan for the job. I have a Tefal non-stick frying pan and an aluminium skillet that I love, but you may hate the combination.

Cooking should be enjoyable and so finding the equipment that can bring you as much joy as possible is important.

We hope this frying pan buyer’s guide has helped you narrow down the pans you’re considering.

What Does PFOA-Free Mean?

For years, PFOA was used in the non-stick coatings of most pots and pans. However, in recent years, concerns have been raised about health risks associated with this manmade material.

What is PFOA?

PFOA, or perfluorooctanoic acid is a chemical used in polymer-based coatings that are designed to be heat, stain, scratch or stick resistant. This chemical is commonly used in cookware, however has also been used in other industries, including construction and manufacturing.

If a non-stick cookware product is advertised as being PFOA-free, this means that the non-stick coating does not contain any PFOA.

Is PFOA still used?

PFOA has not been used in the manufacturing of non-stick cookware since 2013, but by that point, the chemical had already taken its toll on both people and the environment.

PFOA is known as a “forever chemical”. This means that it does not degrade in the environment, so PFOA used even decades ago can still be found in the air, ground and water.

Laws were introduced governing the use of PFOA as there is a chance that PFOA could have a negative health impact in sensitive individuals, and that the chemical is possibly carcinogenic in humans.

How to Care for a Non-Stick Pan

There are a range of methods that you can use to extend the lifespan of your new non-stick pans, including using appropriate utensils and cleaning the pan carefully.

1. Use gentle utensils

Most modern non-stick pans are very durable, however they will always last longer if you choose your utensils carefully. Instead of metal, try to use only plastic, wooden or rubber utensils.

2. Clean the pan carefully

Avoid using abrasive metal cleaning equipment as this can damage the coating of the pan. Instead of these harsh scourers and pads, use soft sponges or washcloths.

Some new non-stick pots and pans are dishwasher safe, but it is still recommended in a lot of cases that the pans are hand washed instead. If in doubt, check with the manufacturer for guidance.

3. Use lowest possible temperatures

High temperatures increase the chances of food sticking and burning, which can lead to the breakdown of most non-stick coatings. The best way to preserve the life of your non-stick coating is to cook every dish at the lowest possible temperature.

Conclusion

Capacity: 8.5 litres

This cleverly designed jam pan from Penguin is sure to make making jam a bit easier for you. It has a stainless-steel exterior, and the base has an aluminium layer.

Aluminium is a brilliant conductor of heat, but it also distributes this heat nice and evenly, which is exactly what you want in a jam pan.

It also has a stainless handle that can lock in the upright position for easy carrying and handling, as well as a solid pouring handle that is riveted in place.

The polished stainless-steel exterior of this jam pan is really beautiful, which is a lovely touch. You can really tell that Penguin went the extra mile with this jam pan to make it as good as possible.

Each handle is riveted into place very securely too. So, this pan will look good and last you for many years of jam making fun.

There is no bucket-like handle on this pan, either. Instead, you get two very secure handles on opposite sides and a 360-degree anti-drip pouring lid for ease of use.

This jam pan is nice and heavy; you can feel the quality straight away. In fact, you can see the quality of this pan just from the pictures.

It has the classic Le Creuset attention to detail and robust build. It is a steeper price than the other jam pans on this list, but if you’re serious about jam making, this is the ideal option for you.

5. Oypla 9L Stainless Steel Maslin Jam Pan

Capacity: 9 litres

This Oypla stainless steel maslin jam pan may not have the fit and finish of some of the jam pans on this list, but don’t let that put off.

This is made from 304 stainless steel, the perfect steel for the job. It has a 9-litre capacity, so it has plenty of space for all your jam making needs. It also has graduated markings in metric and imperial on the inside, so measuring is simple.

You can see some marks from the manufacturing process on this jam pan, which does put some people off. However, this is a very good quality pan, and the price reflects that it doesn’t have the best finish in the world.

What Is Special About a Jam Pan?

You might be wondering why you need jam pans when making jam, or whether you actually need a jam pan to make jam.

We’ll discuss whether you need a jam pan in just a bit, but first, we’d like to talk about why jam pans are special.

Jam pans are very heavy. The Le Creuset pan above is 2.28 kg. A typical saucepan of this size is about 1 kg. This weight is due to the thick base and sides of the pan.

A jam pan needs to be thick to protect the fruit from the heat. When making jam, you don’t want to burn or scorch the fruit. Instead, you want a consistent heat that surrounds the mixture nice and evenly.

A jam pan’s thick sides are designed to do this. They hold heat in very well but don’t get hot enough to burn the fruit that is touching the sides.

You’ll also notice that the bottom of a jam pan is very wide. This allows moisture to escape. When making jam, moisture needs to escape steadily, so jam pans are designed with large bottoms, so more of the pan is in contact with the cooking surface. This means that evaporation happens quickly and consistently.

So, jam pans are special because they are designed to make jam. That isn’t to say that you can’t use these pans for other cooking tasks, though, but more on that in a bit.

Do You Need a Jam Pan?

Jam pans are not essential to making jams, but they are the best tool for the job. As an alternative to a jam pan, you could use a low-sided, wide-based, stainless-steel saucepan.

You’ll need a large saucepan, though. All of the jam pans above are 9 litres, with the exception of the tiny 8.5-litre VonShef one.

If you don’t have a saucepan this size, you will struggle to make jam. You need a lot of fruit to make preservatives and a pan that can easily fit this fruit inside. So, if you are going to have to buy a new pan in order to make jam, you may find it easier to simply buy a pan that is right for the job.

As we’ll learn in the next section, jam pans have many other uses and don’t need to be reserved for the preserved!

Can You Use Jam Pans for Other Cooking Tasks?

Yes, you can. Jam pans are specially designed to make jam and do a fantastic job at this task, but they can be used for loads of other cooking tasks, and we aren’t talking about making chutneys, although you can knock up a fantastic chutney in one too.

Jam pans are also superb for making big batches of soup or making your own stock. You can use them for making caramel and any other high-sugar foods.

So, if you’re a baker, a jam pan can be a really good addition to your cookware arsenal. If you’re more of a chef, you can use it to cook stews, soups and a great deal more.

Most jam pans are safe to use on all hob types but can also go in the oven and even the grill if you have space in there. So, they can be even more versatile than your regular saucepan.

We know that buying a massive saucepan is a big deal, especially if you don’t have much storage space in your kitchen. Plus, if you’re just getting into jam making, that is valuable space for a pan you may only use once a year to take up.

Don’t worry, though, a jam pan is fantastically versatile, and you’ll use it all the time whether you are a baker, chocolatier or a chef.

Conclusion

Jam pans are awesome and can be a very versatile and awesome piece of cookware for just about anyone.

The Penguin jam pan above is an amazing bit of kit, and it looks very similar to the Le Creuset one but for a fraction of the price, so that is certainly the one we’d go for.

If you have other cooking questions you want answers to, or you just fancy window shopping for some new saucepans or a new cooker, we have everything you need here at Chef’s Pick.

So do check out the rest of our cooking and cookware lists before you head into the kitchen and use your new jam pan.

Have you just bought an induction hob? In that case, you may not have all of the cookware you need to cook amazing meals on it.

The first things most induction hob owners think of is pots and pans, of course. Your pots and pans need to be compatible with your induction hob for them to heat up.

However, cookware like a roasting pan is often not considered. But a roasting pan needs to be compatible with your induction hob if you plan on using it to make gravy, sear meat and anything else on the hob.

So, below we have the best induction roasting pans available in the UK right now.

The Best Induction Roasting Pans in the UK

1. ProWare Stainless Steel Tri-Ply 35cm Roasting Pan

Dimensions: 44.1 x 29.2 x 14 cm
Materials: Stainless steel

This roasting pan from ProWare has an attractive brushed stainless-steel finish and feels very tough and sturdy.

Thanks to the aluminium inner core, it holds heat extremely well, meaning it is a monster for roasting. But it is great for lasagne and casseroles too.

The “Tri-Ply” in the name refers to the three layers in this roasting pan’s design. There is a layer of stainless steel on the inside, then a layer of aluminium, then another layer of stainless steel on the outside. Isn’t non-stick, but it’s easy to clean if you soak it first

This pan measures 35 cm long by 26 cm wide and 6 cm deep, so it’s pretty large.

The roasting pan is oven safe to 260 degrees Celsius. If you’re using it in the oven, bear in mind that the stainless-steel handles get very hot, so you will need gloves!

This roasting pan doesn’t come with a lid or a rack, but if you want a straightforward induction-compatible roasting pan with a good capacity, it’s a great choice.

2. MasterClass Enamel Roasting Tin

Dimensions: 27 x 21 x 4 cm
Materials: Steel with an enamel coating

This is a nice and basic roasting pan that works so well that we had to include it on our list. This is a 27 cm by 21 cm roasting pan that is very simple and easy to use.

Just place your meat and veg into the pan, pop in the oven, roast it, bring it out, let the meat rest and make some gravy from the juices in the pan on the hob. It is that simple and easy to get a tasty roast with this pan.

The enamel coating is nice and tough, and the whole pan is made from steel. This means that this roasting pan is very robust and will last a long time in your kitchen.

Granted, this roasting pan won’t last as long as the others on this list, but it will see a good few Christmases and, for the price, we can’t complain about that too much.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

3. Le Creuset 3-Ply Stainless Steel Roaster

Dimensions: 35 x 28 x 11 cm
Materials: Stainless steel

We love this roasting pan from Le Creuset. It is a fantastically well-made roasting pan with a layer of stainless steel on the inside and outside, and a layer of aluminium in the middle. The aluminium helps distribute heat evenly throughout the pan.

As well as being suitable for induction hobs, this roasting pan is also oven safe up to 260 degrees Celsius, or Gas Mark 7. It’s also dishwasher safe.

This roasting pan measures 35 cm long by 25 cm wide and 7 cm deep. However, 7 cm doesn’t include the handles, which add extra height and mean you will need more space in your oven.

The Le Creuset 3-Ply Stainless Steel Roaster doesn’t come with a rack, but you can buy one separately.

As you’d expect for a Le Creuset product, this roasting tray is expensive, but it’s very well made and should last for years, if not decades. It’s the perfect choice if you’re serious about roasting!

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

Dimensions: 40 x 26 x 7.6 cm
Materials: Cast iron

We had to choose this Le Creuset roasting pan for our list. Firstly, it is a very stylish roasting pan that will look great in any kitchen.

However, it is also perfectly designed for roasting meat and veg and using an induction hob too. It’s made from cast iron and has an enamelled finish. This means that the heat distribution and retention is top-notch.

However, it is also deep enough to cook casseroles, lasagne and some of the best roast potatoes that you have ever made.

If you love cooking, this roasting pan is an investment that you will use all of the time. This certainly isn’t a roasting pan that you’ll save for Christmas, you’ll use this throughout the year to create beautiful meals or sides.

What Is an Induction Roasting Pan?

An induction roasting pan is exactly the same as a regular roasting pan. However, it has a ferrous metal bottom that allows it to be used on an induction hob.

With the right accessories, a roasting pan for an induction hob can actually be used to roast directly on the hob.

However, most chefs use a roasting pan in the oven and then finish off the gravy on the hob. But you can sear the meat directly on the hob and then transfer the roasting pan and the meat into the oven.

So, an induction roasting pan allows you to take your roast from the hob to the oven and back again. Granted, it’s not the most versatile piece of cookware that we have ever discussed on here.

Still, these roasting pans can help you make the best roast you have ever made, so that makes them pretty great in our opinion. And, some roasting pans are actually way more versatile than most people realise, but more on that below.

How to Choose an Induction Roasting Pan

Here are some things to consider when choosing a roasting pan.

Size

Before choosing a roasting pan, make sure you know the dimensions of your oven and your hob. To find this out, you can look in the user manual, search the internet for your oven and hob’s model number of measure them yourself.

This is a good idea if you want to avoid making an expensive mistake and buying something too big.

You should also consider the size of what you are roasting. If you are roasting meat, you want there to be at least 5 cm space on each side of the meat to prevent the meat from drying out or dripping juices over the side of the pan and into the oven.

The average induction-compatible roasting pan measures about 35 cm long by 26 cm wide and 6 cm deep.

Material

In order to be induction compatible, a roasting pan needs to have a ferrous base. “Ferrous” means “containing iron”, so an induction-compatible roasting pan will need a base that contains iron.

Stainless steel and cast iron are the most commonly used induction-compatible materials in roasting pans.

One confusing thing is that some induction-compatible roasting pans are made from cast aluminium. Cast aluminium itself isn’t induction compatible.

To get around this, these pans have a stainless-steel base which does work with induction.

Many roasting pans combine layers of stainless steel and aluminium. Stainless steel is used for the outside since it is easy to clean, resistant to staining and is induction compatible, while aluminium is used on the inside for its heat conduction properties.

Extra features

Roasting pans are pretty straightforward, and if you have chosen something made from the right size and right materials there isn’t much else to think about. The only extra features they can come with are handles, a lid and a rack.

Handles make it easier to get the pan in and out of the oven without spilling anything or dropping it. However, they can add extra height to the pan, so make sure you have enough space in your oven if you’re buying a pan with handles.

Handles on these roasting pans are usually made from stainless steel, so they will get very hot and require gloves.

A lid can be a useful feature to help retain moisture and prevent roasts from drying out. However, you might not be able to roast something large like a chicken with the lid on since there might not be enough space.

Racks are useful for roasting meat as they allow air to circulate under the meat. They’re also great if you want to avoid greasy roasts, as all the fat will drip off into the base of the pan.

Many racks have a non-stick coating, which makes them easy to clean and prevents the meat from sticking to your pan.

Price

The roasting pans reviewed here range in price from less than £50 on the low end to over £200. If you’re on a tight budget, you should be able to find an induction-compatible roasting pan for around £20.

However, if you can afford it, it’s better to invest in something high quality that will last for years and years into the future.

Roasting Pan vs Roasting Tin vs Roasting Tray – Are They the Same Thing?

If you’re looking for a roasting pan, you may have noticed that different manufacturers and retailers seem to have different names for the same thing.

“Roasting pan”, “roasting tin” and “roasting tray” all refer to the same thing: a large, oven-safe pan that is typically about 6 cm deep and often comes with a rack.

These pans come in different sizes but the depth is usually the same, at around 6 cm deep. The depth is the main thing that distinguishes this type of pan from a baking tray—baking trays are only about 2 cm deep.

Conclusion

So, there’s our favourite roasting pans that are induction hob safe. If we had to pick just one to recommend, it would be the ProWare Stainless Steel Tri-Ply Roasting Pan since it’s reasonably priced, tough and well made.

A fan-favourite among many cooking lovers, the sauté pan is the versatile gift that keeps on giving.

But where to begin finding the best sauté pan that can go in the oven that is ideal for all your cooking requirements? Allow us to help…

The Best Sauté Pans That Can Go in the Oven

1. Le Creuset 3-Ply Stainless Steel 24cm Sauté Pan

Dimensions: 24 cm diameter
Oven safe: Up to 260°C
Non-stick: Yes

The godfather of kitchen equipment, Le Creuset was bound to be on the list somewhere! Le Creuset are known for their robust and vibrantly-coloured sets.

This sauté pan is part of their stainless-steel range. It has been designed using a multi-layering technology, which involves stainless steel and aluminium being bound (or ‘bonded’) together to form the special three-ply material.

This material offers the best of both the stainless steel and aluminium world, ensuring you get the best out of your cooking.

The product boasts full and even heat distribution, as well as high sides, allowing for precise cooking and limited mess. It even comes with a precision-pour lip, which can be useful for those loving to cook up a storm without having to deep-clean the kitchen afterwards!

Other benefits include it being dishwasher-friendly and suitable for all hob types, including induction.

One thing to consider when investing in this pan include the cost. Le Creuset is on the higher end of the price spectrum, so unless you’re fairly committed to your cooking, cheaper brands could be worth considering.

Also, the pan handle is stainless and therefore can get quite hot when being used in both the oven and on the hob.

However, if looked after well, this product will serve you well and bring much pleasure to your cooking endeavours!

2. Blue Diamond Ceramic Skillet

Dimensions: 14 x 28.8 x 53.7 cm
Oven safe: Up to 220°C
Non-stick: Yes

If you’re thinking this range gets its name from its colour – think again! This product is actually infused with diamonds… We’re not kidding.

But aside from being super bling, is it any good? Yes. It’s oven-safe, robust, suitable for all hob types (including induction). It also has a sturdy forged base, so it doesn’t warp or wobble.

Also, unlike many non-stick pans, its coating is resistant to scratches from metal utensils, which is always a bonus!

Those worried about the chemicals in non-stick coating: fear not, this one is toxin-free! It contains no PFAS, PFOAS, lead or cadmium. It’s lid also comes with steam vents and the product is dishwasher-safe.

So, it has a lot going for it, but will it serve you well many a dinner down the line?

A lot of the reviews speak highly of it, but unfortunately, several of them have stated that this product doesn’t last long before the non-stick coating becomes defective and a ‘nightmare’ to clean.

It might only stay fully non-stick for a few months to a year. So this may be worth bearing in mind.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

3. Tower T800033 Sauté Pan

Dimensions: 28.7 x 49 x 9.5 cm
Oven safe: Up to 280°c
Non-stick: Yes

This Tower sauté pan serves as a ‘multi-pan’, meaning it’s versatile and great for searing, poaching, steaming, etc.

Made up of five-layer coatings consisting of three-layer violet and black finish, with a superior non-stick coating that requires minimal oil, this pan is ideal for a more fat-free approach to cooking.

The coating is robust, scratch-resistant, and suitable for all hob types.

Its forged aluminium-constructed body will distribute heat evenly while cooking. It’s also dishwasher-friendly and an ideal size for larger families.

Some of the downsides to this pan include its weight. It is quite heavy, which can be an issue for those with a compromised grip.

Some reviews have stated that the lid handle is prone to getting hot, so safety issues may need to be considered.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

4. Tefal Comfort Max Stainless Steel Sauté Pan

Dimensions: 50.9 x 29.2 x 10.6 cm
Oven safe: Up to 175°C (for 1 hour)
Non-stick: Yes

The Tefal Comfort Max Stainless Steel Non-stick Sauté Pan usesThermospot technology, which lets you know when the pan has reached the optimum temperature to start cooking.

It does this by changing colour, so it is ideal for cooking foods at precise heats or timings. Its non-stick coating is durable (and BPA-free), so less oil or butter is needed.

Unlike many stainless-steel pans, this one comes with a plastic handle, so it shouldn’t get hot when on the hob, which can be off-putting when on a pan-purchasing mission.

Its other selling points include: dishwasher-friendly, microwave-safe, compatibility with all hob types (including Induction), roomy but lightweight.

It’s worth noting though that this product has a reputation (despite being non-stick) of being prone to sticking and therefore difficult to clean and the requirement of more oil/butter to avoid foods caking the pan.

It is also only oven-friendly on a low temperature (175°C) and for only an hour of cooking.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

Dimensions: 53.9 x 29 x 15.6 cm
Oven safe: Up to 180°C
Non-stick: Yes

Designed with safety and comfort in mind, the Zyliss Ultimate Sauté Pan is ergonomic and heat-resistant, and comes with a soft-touch handle.

The contours of the handle are soft-grip, and provide controlled handling, even if hands are wet. The surface of the pan is granite, so it’s easy to clean (and is dishwasher-safe.)

Other benefits include being scratch-resistant to metal utensils, PFAO-free non-stick coating, and is suitable for all hob types (yup, you guessed it – including induction!)

It also has two plastic handles, which is handy for oven-cooking.

Some reviews of this product have mentioned that it is prone to warping in the middle.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

6. Cooks Professional Stainless Steel Sauté Pan

Oven safe: Up to 250°C
Non-stick: Yes

This stylish and professional-looking sauté pan comes with two small handles on each side (which is great for cooking in the oven with, but not so much for its name-sake: sautéing).

However, it is roomy (30 cm width and a 4.5 litre capacity), which is great for cooking big portions of hearty one-pan meals for the family.

It’s non-stick, suitable for all hob types, and as it’s stainless steel, it’s pretty robust. It’s also dishwasher-safe.

Perhaps its biggest selling feature is that its handles were created to be heat-resistant, despite still being stainless-steel.

Some users of this pan, however, have complained that it isn’t as non-stick as it makes out to be, and is prone to scorch marks – even while cooking on a low temp.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

7. Tower T800003RB Linear Induction Sauté Pan

Dimensions: 28 x 47 x 13.5 cm
Oven safe: Up to 200°C
Non-stick: Yes

This super-glamorous sauté pan certainly looks the business with its chic black and rose gold design, but is it practical as well as pretty? Let’s find out…

It boasts a 2.6 litre capacity, so it is ideal for family cooking or one-pan meals. It has also been created using Cerasure non-stick coating, therefore it requires only a small amount of oil for low-fat cooking.

It is made of 3 mm aluminium, ensuring longevity and even heat distribution.

Unfortunately, it isn’t dishwasher safe, and those with induction cookers need to double-check whether their induction type is compatible with this pan set.

Some people find that the non-stick coating chips and doesn’t last very long. The rose gold rimming is known to tarnish.

See price and reviews on Amazon.co.uk

What to Look for When Buying a Sauté Pan

Modern sauté pans are often a brilliant addition to any kitchen because they are versatile, therefore, they can be used for various different functions.

However, to ensure you’re buying one that will serve you well, make sure you invest in one that is made from heavy gauge material and that the bottom of the pan is thick; this will ensure it won’t be prone to warping and creating large ‘hot spots’ across the surface.

Your pan of choice often depends on your personal needs. For example, the size and capacity will depend on what you use the pan for (and how many mouths you have to feed).

If you have issues with more heavyweight pans (such as arthritis), it is worth investing in a lightweight pan.

Those not concerned with avoiding cooking oils can benefit from a more traditional sauté pan, such as cast iron.

Non-Stick vs. Cast Iron

Both have their benefits, and both have their staunch devotees. Non-stick pans are generally more practical, but because their coating often contains chemicals (and can be prone to flaking), a cast iron pan (if properly maintained) will undoubtedly last you your lifetime.

Conclusion

Cooking has never been easier. Non-stick? Yup. Dishwasher-friendly? Got you covered. Something that looks good enough to forsake a plate and just eat out the pan? Take your pick.

But which is worth the investment? Which one will tick all the boxes and serve you well?

In our professional opinion, the Le Creuset 3-Ply Stainless Steel 24cm Sauté Pan is likely to be your best bet. Yes, it’s a little more costly than the others, but you will get your money’s worth… and then some.

Le Creuset is one of the most robust and reliable brands on the market. This pan is also an ideal size (not too lofty or bulky) and will ensure all your cooking tasks are easy, mess-free, and a general pleasure!

Materials: Aluminium core, titanium non-stick coating

This wok from Tefal has a fantastic titanium non-stick coating that is extremely tough. So much so, this wok comes with a lifetime warranty. It is said that this non-stick coating is 24 times tougher than a regular non-stick coating.

While there isn’t really a way of testing whether this titanium coating can stand up to 24 times the abuse of a normal non-stick coating, at least, we can’t test that, the coating is fantastic and works a treat for all your stir-frying needs.

To make this wok even more versatile, we recommend getting it with the all-in-one pan set. This includes a glass lid, stainless steel steamer and skimmer. Okay, this bundle isn’t available with the wok, but the frying pan it comes with is awesome.

The wok that is available in this range from Tefal is also a great addition to any kitchen.

It’s oven safe up to 250°C and can also be safely washed in the dishwasher, though hand-washing is recommended.

While this hob is excellent for induction hobs, it can take a while to heat up on other regular hobs. Furthermore, the heat distribution isn’t quite as good as on cast iron woks.

Dimensions: 32 cm
Materials: Hard-anodised aluminium, stainless steel, non-stick coating

This wok is a great size, coming in at 32 cm, making it a good choice for larger families or those who love to batch out meals.

Now, this wok is one of the most expensive on this list, but it is built to last a lot of wokking, so it is well worth the money!

This wok has cast stainless steel handles, deep sides walls which are perfect for stir-frying and it is completely oven-safe too.

There is also an excellent non-stick coating on this wok, so there is no seasoning required. Plus, there is a glass lid available for this wok (sold separately) to add even more versatility.

This wok offers very even heat. It’s built to last, though some people have found that the non-stick coating starts to peel after extensive use.

Diameter: 28 cm
Materials: Aluminium, non-stick coating

This wok is perhaps the best on this list if you are looking for a way of cooking healthy meals. You see, with the amazing non-stick coating on this wok, you don’t need any oil or butter to cook with.

So, you can create really tasty stir-fried dishes in this wok that are as healthy as they are delicious.

This wok is made from aluminium, but it has a magnetic base, so it’s perfect for use on an induction hob. The bottom heats up quickly and the deep aluminium sides hold the heat extremely well.

The non-stick coating on this wok is so good that you can simply wipe the surface clean, but the wok is also dishwasher safe too.

However, like with many non-stick pans, some users have found that the non-stick coating starts to fail after a while.

4. Tefal Comfort Max Stainless Steel Non-stick Wok

Diameter: 28 cm
Materials: Stainless steel, non-stick coating

This Tefal wok has the classic Thermospot technology that we have all come to know and love about Tefal products over the years.

This tells you when this stainless-steel wok is up to the perfect temperature to start stir-frying, and the non-sticking coating keeps this wok working for you for a long time.

The wok is dishwasher safe, but unlike most of the woks on this list, it isn’t oven-safe. However, this wok is one of the most affordable on this list. So sacrificing using a wok in the oven seems perfectly acceptable when the wok performs this well and looks this good.

Tefal’s Comfort Max wok is a good size if you’re cooking for up to four people, and it has a nice styling for modern kitchens.

One downside is that the body is quite thin, which can result in food burning. Some people have also found that the handle can loosen over time.

Overall, this wok has to be one of the nicest looking woks on this list and performs really nicely too.

5. Vogue Hancock 13″ Commercial Quality Carbon Steel Flat Base Wok

Diameter: 28 cm
Materials: Stainless steel, non-stick coating

This wok is another awesome mix of traditional styling and modern functionality.

This carbon steel wok is pretty thin, but that doesn’t seem to bother most. This means that it heats up quickly and holds heat pretty well too.

Now, this is a commercial-type wok, and many restaurants around the UK will use woks like this. This can mean that woks like these are almost created to be disposable, but for a typical household kitchen, this product will last many years.

This wok isn’t oven or dishwasher safe, so it’s not quite as versatile and easy to clean as some other products.

This is the cheapest wok on this list (at the time of writing) and will need seasoning as it doesn’t have a non-stick coating. However, it’s a fantastic wok for those wanting a traditional style wok that works great on their induction hob.

Do All Woks Work on Induction Hobs?

You can get woks that work great on induction hobs. How well the wok will work depends on which wok you buy, and can even depend on the type of induction hob you have.

Firstly, any wok with a tradition round bottom won’t perform too well on a normal induction hob. Induction hobs need good contact with the metal of any saucepan or wok, so if your wok has a rounded bottom, a traditional induction hob can struggle to heat it up.

Now, you can buy induction hobs that have a specialised ring for woks with rounded bases. These are a shallow basin, rather than the traditional flat ring. If you want to use a wok for most of your cooking, this is a great way of ensuring pretty much any wok made from a magnetic material will work perfectly on your hob.

However, many of us only use a wok on the odd occasion. It may even sound a little silly to most of us to choose a particular induction hob that is designed for woks. So, what can you do if you fancy using a wok occasionally?

Induction Hob Adapters for Woks

You can buy adapters for induction hobs that allow you to use any saucepan that you may own on your new induction hob. For example, you could try the RUNZI 7.5 inch Heat Diffuser available on Amazon.co.uk.

If you have loads of saucepans, a frying pan, a flat-bottomed wok and so on, they will work on your induction hob with this adapter.

This adapter takes the place of the magnetic bottom that a lot of flat-bottomed woks and other saucepans have that work with induction hobs.

There are also adapters for induction hobs that are designed to work solely with woks. These create a shallow basin and are magnetic.

So, you can put this adapter on your induction hob each time you want to use your wok and it will heat up any type of wok.

These adapters for induction hobs aren’t too expensive and are certainly worth exploring if you already have a nice wok or saucepan set that you would like to use with your induction hob.

Do Carbon Steel Woks Work on Induction Hobs?

Yes, carbon steel woks work great on induction hobs.

Basically, any wok that is created from a magnetic material will work perfectly on these hobs because induction hobs use a magnetic field to create the heat.

So, you can either choose to buy a wok with a magnetic base, or the whole wok can be made from this material.

The materials that will work for woks on induction hobs include:

Carbon steel

Cast iron

Stainless steel

Copper

Aluminium (with one of the magnetic materials above on the base, or with the use of the wok adapters mentioned above).

Can I Stir Fry on an Induction Hob?

You can stir fry on an induction hob, but most people who use woks on an induction hob do have to make certain sacrifices when it comes to traditional stir-frying techniques.

For example, unless you have a wok adapter or an induction hob with the shallow basin I mentioned earlier, a wok with a flat bottom is your best chance at stir-frying on an induction hob. However, this isn’t considered true stir-frying by the purest.

Now, most people aren’t too worried about stir-frying in the traditional sense. Still, if you are, then it may be worth exploring these options. You won’t be able to enjoy stir-frying the traditional way without one of these basin hobs or a good adapter.

Why Use a Wok Instead of a Frying Pan?

Lots of home cooks grab the frying pan for most cooking tasks on the hob. If something needs to be shallow fried or seared, chances are, we will all grab a frying pan, particularly in the UK.

However, many homes in the UK also have a wok just sitting in the cupboard, minding its own business. A wok is a brilliant cooking tool when used for the right tasks, but when is the right time to bring out the wok?

When to use a frying pan and a wok

A frying pan is the best choice if you are searing a steak, for example. The frying pan heats up nice and evenly and is a nice flat surface to get a good sear on your meat.

However, if you’re cooking lots of veg along with your steak (in a stir fry, for example), a frying pan isn’t the best option. You see, the reason that steak cooks so well in a frying pan is that the bottom is flat. This allows the steak to sit in a pool of oil and get nice and seared and beautiful.

However, a wok’s rounded shape means that less of the food is sitting in the oil. So, as you cook, the heat is transferred throughout the dish, but it isn’t all sitting in the oil getting seared and brown.

So, in the case above, the frying pan can be used to cook the perfect steak; you can then use a wok to cook the veg, create a lovely sauce and then add strips of the steak into the pan to coat it in the sauce and serve.

Differences between a frying pan and a wok

1. Woks are healthier

You need hardly any oil in a wok, especially if you have seasoned the wok prior to cooking.

Traditionally, you run a small amount of oil around the rim of the wok when you are ready to start cooking, and this is enough to coat the entire wok with oil but not enough to make your food oily.

Throughout the cooking process, the oil will settle into the bottom of the wok. So, you can remove most of the food without much oil on it at all.

Of course, the oil traditionally makes up part of the sauce that is added during the cooking process. Still, if you want to be really healthy, you can skip this step and remove the food without coating it in the oil at the end.

2. Woks heat up quickly

Most works are made from thin carbon steel; at least, traditional woks are. This thin steel heats up very quickly and evenly, so you can start cooking very quickly. However, it also means that the entire surface of the wok is extremely hot throughout the cooking process.

This means that the stuff you are cooking doesn’t need to be in the bottom of the wok to cook. So, you can really pile in the veg and meat in the wok and know that it will thoroughly cook everything.

3. Not frying, but stir-frying

A common misconception about woks and frying pans is that they do the same job. However, a wok stir-fries, it doesn’t fry.

Frying is intended to make meat and veg crispy and seared nicely, and this involves a lot of oil. Stir-frying, on the other hand, is intended to cook food very quickly while stirring it quickly.

Stir-frying is a very old Chinese cooking technique that is more like sautéing than frying. It uses extremely hot oil (but a very small amount), in a very hot wok, to cook veg and meat in minutes in a very healthy way.

Why use a wok instead of a frying pan?

As you can see, woks are awesome and shouldn’t be left in the cupboard gathering dust. Here are some tasty dishes that you should be using a wok for if you have one:

Warming tortillas

Smoking meats

Quick and tasty side veggies

Popcorn

Mussels

Deep frying

Steaming fish and veg

Soup

and more!

So, when should you use a wok instead of a frying pan? Well, woks are perfect for really quick meals and are a one-pot wonder that is very healthy for you.

Woks allow you to stir fry veg and meat in minutes and introduce sauces directly into the pan, coating all of the food nicely. They are very fast, healthy and a lot of fun to cook with.

Woks were designed for cooking stir-fries, but not the basic stir-fries that we cook in the UK. Check out this wok recipe book.
